Here’s The “Back Story” Behind The

I know you’ve heard other people make this claim before, and some “ivory tower” commission members (bozos) even try to take credit for it.
So, right now, I’m going to break it all down for you and show you what really happened, who was involved, and what the results were.
Let’s begin . . .
First of all, for four of the five times this plan has been implemented (& worked so fantastically), I was leader of a teaching team that recognized the problems we were having in the classroom and willing to try something different.
It all started way back in 1963, when I jump-started my independent professional teaching in New Jersey, in a self-contained 4th grade classroom.
Previously, I spent a number of years substitute teaching (both long and short-term) in various districts, while I worked in a financial career to support my family. (Teaching just didn’t pay the Big Bucks!)
Out in the boondocks, I was given a bunch of textbooks – and left alone – to figure-out how to cram information into a crowd of students.
Frankly, I Knew I Needed To Prove Myself
And Help Every Student Succeed
. . .Yikes!
These youngsters had widely varying skill levels and came from every social strata of society, from the children of wealthy professionals, all the way to the children of migrant workers.
Left to my own devices, I was able to implement the very earliest stages of what I humbly call “The Kingsland Plan”. The techniques worked perfectly and helped every one of my students to finish the year functioning at 6th grade level, or above.
Remember, many of these kids started the year as struggling 4th graders. And for good reason because . . .
- Almost half of the students were not grounded in basic reading and math skills, totally unprepared for 4th grade.
- A sizable percentage of those remedial students were the children of migrant workers, living under demoralizing conditions.
- Some of the migrant worker parents barely spoke English and were unable to help their children with schoolwork.
And if that wasn’t bad enough, this was the very first time I was under contract and had total responsibility for my student’s success.
So you can understand why I was nervous.
But my nervousness turned to excitement when
EVERY ONE Of My 4th Graders Finished The School Year
At 6th Grade Level, or ABOVE!
But there was always this little voice in the back of my head saying . . .
“MAYBE YOU JUST GOT LUCKY!”
Yes, my teaching Plan was a big success. In fact . . . it worked so well
It Actually Worked TOO GOOD!
The next thing I knew, the school district asked me to develop a district-wide program for grades k thru 8.
You may be saying to yourself . . .
“MAYBE YOU DID JUST GET LUCKY!”
Who knows? Maybe it was a fluke, right? It’s possible.
And now it was time to answer the question that was bugging me . . .
“Could My Luck Really Hold Out?”
So I decided to accept the challenge . . . and see if I could do it all over again, on a much larger scale.
I promised to handle it and I wasn’t going back on my word, even if I had to “bust my behind” to get it done.
And my new program was a rip-roaring SUCCESS!
Fortunately, the success that followed led to glowing evaluations and a fast track for advancement.
With everything so rosy, I anticipated a promising future for my New Jersey teaching career.
I even began to think about a possible political career, as well.
Then, Everything Changed
And this time, I was really worried.
You’d think I’d be brimming with confidence about the future since everything had gone so well to this point. But I wasn’t.
Here’s why:
- I uncovered district-wide budget discrepancies in my department.
- In spite of having my job threatened, I became a whistle-blower over a misappropriation of funds by the school board.
- All my “Excellent” evaluations mysteriously disappeared. (Don’t you hate it when that happens?)
- I was NOT rehired at the end of the school year and I did NOT receive tenure.
- With three daughters to support, even though I was eventually exonerated and offered reinstatement, I’d already accepted a permanent contract teaching job in Southern California. (Nothing like a little added stress from moving to keep things “exciting”.)
Anyway, as much as I could have become discouraged about the future, the truth is, moving my teaching career to California was one of the best things that ever happened to me.
Starting over was scary, but once again, my fears were unfounded.
I soon had a chance to prove my teaching plan was successful. In fact . . .
I Was Able To Prove The Plan 4 More Times!
And just like the first time, I ended each year with super-achieving students, as did my fellow teachers, who also enjoyed the process of succeeding so well.

- O.K. The first self-contained classroom allowed me to have total freedom to work with my students. Very few teachers get that privilege under the current system.
- My second attempt to implement the plan was with a group of students no one else wanted to teach, because they were such discipline problems. (Two teachers had already quit that year after being assigned to this class.)
- My third and fourth attempts involved not only my fellow teachers, but the principals and the office staff as well.
